My son got this in his Easter basket almost half a year ago. He is 5 years old, a huge SpongeBob fan, and has autism. He was enjoying matching games at the time, and so when he unwrapped this he was thrilled!
To say this has had a lot of use since he got it is a major understatement. For months it got daily use, and he still plays with it 2-4 times a week. Not only does he love it, but his typical 3-year-old and 2-year-old sisters try to steal it from him whenever he has it out! His 4-year-old cousin was also trying to play with it during the Easter festivities.
I found that it was great for his vocabulary (he would label the picture on a card when it went missing), especially. And I liked that there are a ton of cards in the set...that way you can vary small games or do one big game if you want more of a challenge. He could take 10-16 cards to school in a ziploc bag and use them as a reinforcer.
This was WELL worth the cost, and I recommend it to anyone with a preschooler/kindergartener who likes SpongeBob!
This is a commercial version of the card game "Concentration" my mom used to play with me with a regular deck. The difference is that you had to match spades with clubs, hearts and diamonds and it made you look at numbers. In this dummy down version for lazy parents, the pictures are easier, but there are more of them. The instructions tell you to set out cards 8 X 9. I really didn't have the room, plus it was difficult for me to reach all of them from one spot, let alone the 3 year old who held me hostage to the game. I ended up using just 10 pairs (20 cards) for the game.
Is it educational? No way. While it may help a kid learn basic memory skills, it doesn't teach them numbers, colors, state capitals, or how to work in a sweat shop.
The cards are thick and have to be "punched out" of cardboard. Why? So they can sell you a bigger box. Really. Why don't they just market the cards as a simple deck? Because parents will see the deck and won't buy it because it is too simple. But if they see an overpriced box....
